Check this out! Last weekend we caught Cathay Pacific 747 freighter landing on 09L at London Heathrow. But as it was on approach, there was an intense light that appeared to be heading towards the path of the approach. You can see from the height of the light and delay in time V's the altitude of the 747 as it appears through the fog, that this light is not associated with the Jumbo.
We checked back on radar and the only explanation we could see was an Air Canada Jet that was on its climb-out departing LHR. But it was too close and, with the light that close, we would see the anti collisions and ‘flashing’ wing tip lights. The light definitely appears to be a strobe, like the type on modern aircraft, but it’s on its own and not flashing, so that would be a (inner) wing light or undercarriage light.
So it’s a mystery, share your thoughts.
